Going Blue uses an entropy coding scheme where the number of forecast periods in each message depends on the entropy of the weather forecast. Forecasts for stable conditions with little entropy use far less information than those for stormy, variable conditions. This dashboard helps visualize how much data is transmitted at each forecast length.

The user picks a priority mode — Detail, Auto, or Range — and the server fills the message by walking that mode's refinement path: every step either covers one more day at 12h or makes one covered day a rung finer. Detail plays resolution first (hourly detail before coverage), Range plays coverage first (the whole 12-day horizon before any refinement), and Auto balances the two. How far the fill gets along the path is expressed through a sequence number; the highest value is the top of the mode's path.

The units of this dashboard are fill percentage, which represents the sequence number as a percentage of the maximum possible.

Fill frontier

Percent of forecasts reaching each fill level, averaged over the base variables and each optional variable added on its own — so the line moves when any variable's encoding changes. An encoding improvement moves the curves to the right. Hover a mode to break it into those component curves.

Base variables only. Sampled land sites roll up to Köppen major groups (A tropical, B arid, C temperate, D continental, E polar) and ocean sites to 30° latitude bands; favorites are the curated registry, always held out of codebook training. Hover a cell for the message count and body bits/period.
